Lenneke van der Aart

Counsellor and social worker

My therapy style can be best described as warm, flexible and attuned to the unique aspects of each person’s life. My combined training in social work, child therapy and counselling allows for a holistic approach in supporting and treating individuals.

In my work I find the following of great importance:

  • Focussing on strengths of people .
  • Take the time for every individual to help them become the best version of themselves.
  • Value each and every individual with their own special talents, abilities and challenges.
  • Treat every person with respect, kindness and unconditional positive regard.
  • Open and honest communication
  • Humour ( of course only when appropriate, but it is an important factor in working not just with children, but people in general).

I use a different range of methods, always adjusted to the needs of my clients:

  • Solution focussed therapy
  • Positive psychology
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy
  • Mindfulness
  • Play based therapy
  • Master of Social Work

  • Bachelor of Counselling

  • Bachelor in school counselling

  • Clinical supervisor

I have  almost 20 years of experience working with children aged 5-12 years old,  teens and adults. I  worked in The Netherlands as a school counsellor, and have worked in Melbourne as a Family Services Practitioner. I also have extensive experience in working in the mental health sector.

I continue to work on my professional development through continues training and supervision.

More about me

I am a very social person, who loves to be around other people. For me that is the best part about my job, working with different people in all different ages. I am curious and caring and very intuitive.

I am a mum to two energetic little boys, who keep me on my toes and who love to join me going on an adventure. This can be either going camping, exploring our surroundings or just having a fun day at the beach.

I am born in The Netherlands, but due to my fathers work I have lived all over the world and because of this I take a big interest in different cultures and always try to work in a way that is in tune with the cultural background of my clients.

My glass is always half full instead of half empty, and I try to incorporate this positive outlook in my work, by always tuning into the positives too. This is what helps us forward in our lives, to find our strengths and build on the positives. If we only focus on the negatives it will pull us down time and time again.

I have had a private practice for over 5 years now and it is the best decision I have made, because I can really tailor my counselling to what my clients need.

Thank you for taking your time to read more about me! I am looking forward to working with you/your child and support you/your child on your/your child’s journey in life.

About the name

Mimosa counselling

Mimosa stands for protection, love, sensitivity, vulnerability and most Mimosa flowers are yellow.

Yellow stands for opening to wisdom, redemption, cheerfulness, pleasure, it stimulates the imagination and it stands for willpower/spirit power.

So actually for me the mimosa stands for: Strength in Vulnerability.
This is the principle from which I work. A child is vulnerable, but at the same time a child has so much strength and I want to work with that strength. I want to help the child to (re) find his own strength and to lay a wonderful foundation for later when he/she grows up.

And then for the adults. Everyone has their vulnerabilities, but you also possess immense strength and wisdom and I want to help you find this and utilize it to move forward.
